Rescue Squad 8 was dispatched for a building fire at Landover Mall in
Co 33's area. Squad 8 and Deputy Chief Mehaffey ( Chief 8B ) responded,
however right after being dispatched on the 33 box, a house fire was dispatched
to the rear of 5930 Central Ave down the street in Capitol Heights. Due
to the distance and number of units on the 33 box and the proximity of
the house fire in Capitol Heights, Chief 8B took himself off the 33 box
and rerouted to house fire as Squad 8 continued on the call. Chief 8B
arrived behind E51 at 11 Bayou Ave with fire showing from the basement
and front porch area of a 2 story vacant house. E51 ran a line and quickly
began knocking the fire in the basement as other units began to arrive.
E174 stretched a line as well as E294 to the first and second floors as
fire traveled throuout the walls in the balloon frame house. Chief 38A
arrived and assumed command giving Chief 8B the interior sector. Truck
26 arrived and threw numerous ground ladders, ran lights, and vented the
house including opening the roof as the Engine Companies and Squad 27
worked on the inside exposing all the fire in the walls. Other units were
specialed to the scene to assist in the extensive overhaul. All the units
operating took a beating, working hard to control this fire. There were
two firefightter injuries with one being transported to the hospital and
the other injuring his knee after falling through a hole in the first
floor. The units cleared the scene in about 2 1/2 hours. The fire Squad
8 ran ended up bein a fire in a storage room. Squad 8 cleared that fire
in about 30 minutes.
