NEVER A DULL MOMENT

The County Fire Department has stopped the ability to have all hall rentals at the firehouse to supplement any fundraising the volunteers may need. In addition, all boot drives have also been deemed "illegal" and our budget from the county has virtually been cut in half. Times are tough for everyone in these terrible economic times, but keep us in mind if the ability to donate comes up. Thank you for your continued support.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

Seat Pleasant is looking for volunteers to assist with staffing at the station. If you have free time to give whether you have no time in the fire service or are a seasoned veteran in another department, Seat Pleasant could be a good fit for you. Currently we are responsible for staffing (except for the ambulance**) everyday from 1500 to 0700 the next morning and then every weekend from 1500 hours Friday until 0700 Monday morning. Recently due to the budget, our career personnel have been removed on holidays altogether making volunteers responsible for staffing everything during the 24 hour period. In addition, our call load has increased due to the removal of career personnel at neighboring stations essentially making our first due larger. If you think you may be interested, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

** We do have EMS only membership available for those wishing to ride 88 **

March 9th - Seat Pleasant mourns the loss of PFC Thomas Jensen #2853 - Along with PGPD, family, friends, and everyone that knew him, the Seat Pleasant Volunteer Fire Company mourns the loss of PFC Thomas Jensen who died in the line of duty. Below is the official press release.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is mourning the loss of Police Officer First Class Thomas P. Jensen, who died last night at Prince George’s Hospital Center after courageously battling injuries he received while responding to an emergency call on February 27, 2010. Officer Jensen, 27, was a five year veteran of the police department assigned to the Hyattsville District Station, Squad 22. Officer Jensen was critically injured while responding to a call to assist the fire department with a disorderly person reportedly under the influence of PCP. He struck a sheet of black ice on Baltimore Avenue at Greenbelt Road in College Park at 6:55 a.m. on February 27th causing his vehicle to crash into a telephone pole.Officer Jensen had been treated in the Intensive Care Unit at Prince George’s Hospital Center since the crash. He died last night from injuries he received in the crash at approximately 9:30 p.m. “Officer Jensen was a beloved member of our police family and his loss is a huge blow to all of us,” stated Chief of Police Roberto Hylton. “I worked with Officer Jensen’s father and remember when Officer Jensen was born. This loss is made all the more difficult because of the close ties with the Jensen family. Officer Jensen grew up in Prince George’s County; he is truly one of our own.” Officer Jensen is the son of retired Sergeant Tom Jensen and leaves behind his wife of five months, Kristelle. Information on funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

Rest in peace brother.

March 7th - Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 on another first due fire - Just after 0530 hours, Squad 8 was alerted for the Hazmat Box in the 5900 Blk of Seat Pleasant Dr for the gas station on fire. Just prior to dispatch, PSC had been looking for the Squad on the air and requested via phone that Company 8 take the Squad. Squad 8 arrived first at the Seat Pleasant BP in the 5800 Blk of MLK Hwy with heavy fire conditions throughout. The crew from Squad 8 split up and worked to secure many propane tanks, force entry, and search as there was a report of the cashier still trapped inside (the fire was started by an unknown male with the employee still inside). Incoming engine companies worked to extinguish the fire but it got ahead of them and up into the roof with a partial collapse so units were pulled out by command. Master streams worked to extinguish the rest of the fire and the initial search by Squad 8 was negative. Ambulance 88 of course showed up on the working fire dispatch. Squad 8 remained onscene for just over 4 hours for extensive overhaul and to assist investigators. This is the 3rd building to burn at this intersection since the first of the year.

Units from 8 have been going non stop since it began 9 days ago running wires down, structural collapses due to the weight of the snow, and medic locals like you wouldnt believe. Squad 8 has spent much of its time barreling through the snow and pulling ambulances and medic units who were stuck in snow banks and drifts, running medic locals by themselves to see if people actually needed to go to the hospital, and on many occasions responding to medic locals, loading the patient in the squad, and taking them to a passable road to meet up with an ambulance. Crews also used the companies 4 wheel drive Tahoe to make it back into neighborhoods that apparatus couldnt make it too. At that point the crew would evaluate the patient and if needed transport the patient to an awaiting ambulance or medic unit. During the 9 days since the storm, Company 8 has responded to 321 runs (an average of about 36 runs daily) and have missed that wonderful thing called sleep. We hope that spring arrives soon.

January 1st - Annual breakdown of 2009 for Company 8 - Well 2009 saw a lot of things happen for Seat Pleasant. We received and placed in service our new 2009 Seagrave (Engine 82), sold Engine 81(our workhorse), and had our Squad (The Super Squad) deadlined and replaced with a piece of apparatus (Reserve Squad 27) that is falling apart just like ours was. Our membership has grown some but we still continue to look for new, DEDICATED members to help out with staffing. Fires, shootings, and extrications were all down this year to our surprise but the overall call load was up by 600 + additional runs including over 450 additional ambulance runs and over 300 additional engine calls. This can be attributed to neighboring companies not being able to respond on calls for the last 6 months of the year due to cutbacks and lack of membership. We expect 2010 to be even busier as this trend continues. We hope everyone had a great holiday and look forward to a great 2010.

December 19th - Blizzard hits Seat Pleasant. Crews kept busy digging out - Well the first major snow hit the area dumping up to two feet of snow in the bustling metropolis of Seat Pleasant and surrounding communities. Crews were kept busy digging out the bays, FD vehicles, and all the ambulances that kept getting stuck on medic locals in the area. There were no calls of major importance but crews took in 90 runs during Friday when the snow started through Sunday when it ended. Below you will find a run of the mill truck fire back in the park off Shady Glen Dr. Like we said, if it didnt involve digging, not much happened.

November 30th - Engine 82 on early morning house fire in Capitol Heights - Around 0130, Engine 82 was alerted second due to the area of Tunic Ave & Central Ave, in Company 5's area, for a house on fire. Engine 82 and Chief 8 (McGill) arrived first in the unit block of Tunic Ave to find smoke showing from a house. Engine 82 took their own hydrant and ran a line to find a room off in the front of the house and extinguished the same. The assignment was scaled back for overhaul and investigations. Interestingly enough, Squad 8 had been to this same address just hours before for an injured person from a domestic where things seemed to be heated. The cause is under investigation. Ambulance 88 also responded on the run on the working fire dispatch. The units from 8 returned to service in about 90 minutes.

November 26th - Busy Thanksgiving ends with trauma for Seat Pleasant - During the holiday today as the career people were removed to fill overtime slots, volunteers put 3 crews in service and were kept busy all day running calls including many box alarms, gas leaks, fire alarms, and the usual medic locals as well as preparing a holiday feast for everyone. We eventually got a break for about 30 minutes around 1900 or so where we had a chance to sit down and spend time with one another and eat the enormous amount of food we had made. As the meal ended , the calls started again and the crews were off. The last call of the day sent Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 to Central Ave & Addison Rd, by the firehouse, for a pedestrian struck. Units arrived to find a male still in the road after being struck by a vehicle. The patient was treated and packaged by the crews from 8 and taken to a local trauma center by Ambulance 88 and Medic 46. In all, the company took in 35 runs on this Thanksgiving Holiday.
