VOLUNTEERS WANTED

Tired of your fire department not running enough fire? trauma ? or calls in general ? Does sitting around the firehouse all day flipping through tv channels hoping to run just 1 or 2 calls sound like a profitable day ? Is the quiet serenity of the outside world and neighborhood around your station just the pits ? Do you enjoy a lack of sleep ? Well you're in luck then !!! The Seat Pleasant Volunteer Fire Company is looking for experienced firefighters and EMT's to join us. If you have training and are already a member of a department within the county, state, or even the good ol US of A and can dedicate a day or two a week or even a few weekends a month let us know, we'd love to hear from you. Click HERE for info on membership or HERE for info on a ride along. Stay safe and see you soon.

The County Fire Department has stopped the ability to have all hall rentals at the firehouse to supplement any fundraising the volunteers may need. More to come on that if the county changes their position, but for now, no hall rentals. We will keep you posted.

Upon examining it, it was discovered that there were many cracks in the box and body of the squad and that it could possibly be a safety hazard. Well, we have been saying that for over a year now and have been told that there is no significant damage to the squad, it is fine and there is no replacement scheduled for our squad. The engine from 46 cleared their previous call and responded as well making Engine 83 the 5th due engine. E461 arrived with nothing evident but after investigating found a room off upstairs. Engine 83 (5th due) arrived and picked up 46's (1st due) line. The crew from 83 reported to the house and performed a secondary search as the fire was quickly knocked down. Ambulance 88 arrived and was given EMS duties on the working fire dispatch. The units from 8 returned to service in just over 30 minutes. Then later in the evening just before 1730, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the area of Central Ave & Cindy La, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident with a tractor trailer overturned. Units from 8 arrived and confirmed 1 trapped. Apparently this large trailer had began hitting vehicles all the way back down at East Capitol St & Maryland Park Dr and continued on Central Ave until it slammed into several cars here and flipped over in a ditch. Additional EMS units were called to the scene. Squad 8 extricated one victim from a vehicle in about 20 minutes. Medic 46 transported said patient to a local trauma center while PA5 transported another. Units from 8 returned to service in about 45 minutes.

January 8th - Engine, Squad, and Chief 8A on 2 alarm high rise fire - Just after 2030 hours, Engine 81, Squad 8, and Chief 8A (Mehaffey) were alerted to 2031 Brooks Dr, in Company 26's area, for smoke on the 2nd floor of a high rise. E261 arrived and found heavy smoke conditions on the second floor and began looking for the source. Due to the heavily populated building and the possible need for evacuations, Command called for a precautionary 2nd alarm. Units found a vacant 1 bedroom apartment with heavy fire involving the kitchen area with some extension. The crew from Engine 81, dispatched 4th due, arrived 2nd and picked up 26's line. The crew then advanced their high rise pack to the second floor to back up 26. Squad 8 was of course given the RIC and set up in the lobby where they assisted a few handicapped residents from the building. The Squad crew was soon redeployed to the 2nd floor to assist with ventilation. Chief 8A was sent to the 3rd floor to check the apartment above with crews for any extension and then assisted with ventilation. The cause of the fire is suspicious and under investigation as the apartment was vacant and there were sofa cushions found shoved inside the stove (not too sure that would taste good). The units from 8 cleared and returned to Seat Pleasant in just over an hour.

January 6th - Engine 83 on night time Forestville house fire, 2nd fire of the day - Just minutes before midnight, Engine 83 was dispatched as the 4th due engine to the 7200 Blk of Leona St, in Company 23's area, for a house on fire. Units arrived on the scene to find heavy fire showing from the first floor of the house with extension to the second. Engine 83 arrived and picked up E271's line a few blocks down the street and then made up a 200 ft line off of 23's engine and ran it to the side C/D corner. The crew forced entry, vented, and began extinguishing fire in the rear of the house. The crew then redployed their line to the second floor where they began opening up looking for extension and getting hot spots. Five residents from the home including 3 children narrowly escaped prior to the FD arrival and were taken to area hospitals with smoke inhalation. The fire is still under investigation and Engine 83 cleared in just over an hour.

Story from Fox 5 here

January 6th - Engine 83 on early morning suspicious fire on Hill Rd - Just after 0430 hours, Engine 83 was alerted to the 1100 Blk of Hill Rd, in Company 38's area, for the front porch of a house on fire. Units arrived to find smoke showing and went to work. Engine 83 arrived and picked up 38's line and ran a line to the first floor. Units worked to extinguish several set fires to the front and rear of the address which extended to the crawl space. Units worked to open up some of the walls on the first floor to check for extension. The fire was extinguished with minimal extension and investigations was called to the scene. Engine 83 returned to service in about 35 minutes.
January 3rd - Another shooting and another small fire for Company 8 - Around 0040 hours, Squad 8 and Ambulance 88 responded to the 200 Blk of Quarry Ave, in the Wilburn section of Seat Pleasant, for one shot in the neck. Units arrived to find a male shot in the face but breathing and conscious. Apparently the male had been shot by an acquaintance through the door of his residence and was struck in the face. Units treated and packaged the patient and was transported to a local trauma center by PA5. Units from 8 returned to service in about 25 minutes. Then later around 1330 hours, Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 responded to Fairmount Heights High School in the 1400 Blk of Nye St in Company 38's area for a fire in the gym. Engine 83 arrived and picked up 38's line and established command. Units found a storage room on fire in the gym with smoke conditions. Engines 384 and 83 worked to overhaul the storage room while the special services coordinated ventilation efforts for the large school. The fire was suspicious in nature and investigations was called. Units from 8 picked up and returned in about 45 minutes.
January 2nd - Engine on small fire followed by shooting - Just after 1600 hours, Engine 83 and Chief 8 (McGill) responded to the 4600 Blk of Heath St, in Company 17's area, for a house on fire. Duty Chief 800 arrived on the scene with light smoke showing and a civilian with smoke inhalation. Engine 83 arrived and secured their own water supply and reported to the house where units found a small fire in one of the rooms. Apparently, the residents had no electricity and "borrowed" some from the unit downstairs. The one extension cord that ran from the basement to the first floor was not strong enough to run most of the electronics for the house so of course it caught on fire extending to the carpet and some items in a room. Engine 83 worked to open the walls and cut out the carpet. The rest of the electronics in the house that were not powered by the basement unit were powered by another extension cord that ran to a house in the rear, so only time will tell what happens with that. Units from 8 returned to service in about 30 minutes. Then just after leaving around 1650 hours, Engine 83 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to the 700 Blk of Mentor Ave, in Company 5's area, for a report of one shot. Apparently the male had been walking up the street when a man in a mask approached from behind and then was shot. Units arrived to find a male shot once in the lower body. Units treated and packaged the patient who was transported to a local trauma center. Engine 83 returned in about 20 minutes and Ambulance 88 returned in about 45 minutes.

January 1st - The yearly breakdown - Well another year has come to an end here at Seat Pleasant. The company was busy again this year with the usual ups and downs. Calls were up this year as we ran about 550 more but that could be due to better record keeping now that CAD is available in station. Fires were up but back to about normal as 2006 was exceptionally slow. Shootings and extrications were about the same as last year. We would like to thank everyone who was part of these 7500 + calls this year that rode with us and dedicated their time and showed up to work. As always, we are looking for additional members to join us in 2008 as we are sure it will be as busy if not busier, most likely be named busiest special service again in the county, and of course we will be receiving our new engine. Have a good 2008 everyone and stay safe !!!
