At 1625 hours the Utility from station 5 called in smoke showing from the roof of a church at 408 Mentor Ave a few blocks from their station bringing Engine 83 on the run. The crew picked up E37's line and then advanced an attack line to the attic area. Units found fire in the roof (allegedly started by roofers) and E37 and QT38 opened the roof while E8 and T9 worked on opening up the inside. The fire was extinguished and the assignment scaled back to 2 and 2 for overhaul. Engine 83 returned to service in about 90 minutes. While the engine was operating on the fire, Ambulance 88 was alerted with transfer companies to Eastern Ave & Kenilworth Ave, in Company 38's area, for an accident. Units arrived along with DCFD to find a vehicle that had been run off the road into a building with several injured. Ambulance 88 took a pediatric trauma to a local trauma center with DC EMS1 and DC Medic 27 transported additional patients. Ambulance 88 cleared their call in about 90 minutes.
