Late Friday night another weather phenomenon known as a "Derecho" came through the mid Atlantic area and caused massive damage including structure collapses, flipping vehicles, and leaving millions without power. This translated into a busy day for everyone. Company 8 responded to 45 runs on Saturday with just a single engine and ambulance. Calls were mostly for wires down and trees into houses although there were a couple of fires. Several houses on Fernleaf Ave suffered serious damage due to trees falling through them and Seat Pleasant Dr was impassible in the same area due to poles and wires across the road. Just after 0200 hours, Engine 82 was alerted on the second alarm on 64th Ave in Company 30's area where units had heavy fire from a mid rise with people trapped. The engine missed being on the initial box due to handling a wires call off Shady Glen. The crew didn't do much work but remained on scene for about 45 minutes. Later around 2211 hours, Engine 82 (again clearing a wires call), Ambulance 88, and Chief 8 responded to 6912 G St, in Seat Pleasant, for a house fire. Units from 8 arrived to find a working fire in the basement and extinguished the same. Searches proved negative and the assignment scaled back to 2 and 1. Chief 8 had the command and there were no injuries. Units from 8 cleared in about 45 minutes and took in 3 more runs prior to midnight. In all, Company 8 took in 86 runs from Friday through Sunday.
