First due mass casualty incident with fatality and one trapped

Friday, October 19, 2012   At 2132 hours Engine 82 and Ambulance 88 were alerted to Central Ave and Soper La, in Seat Pleasant, for an accident with a report of one trapped and people ejected. Engine 83 also quickly cleared an auto fire nearby at the Metro and was added to the call as well. Units arrived to find two vehicles that had collided with a loaded Metro Bus.  Upon a quick investigation it was determined that one of the vehicles had a trauma code trapped inside and the bus had about 40 passengers. An EMS task force was called as the crews from 83 and 88 began triaging patients while the crew from 82 did what they could while they waited for the rescue squad to arrive. In all, 11 patients were taken to area hospitals and the person trapped was extricated but pronounced dead. Apparently the accident was caused by the two vehicles racing down Central Ave and colliding with the bus. Both engines cleared in about 90 minutes and the ambulance in about 2.5 hours.  This was another example that a rescue squad is still needed in Seat Pleasant despite what county officials say. The incidents demonstrating this need continue to climb.

Members kept busy with crab feast and traumas
